Academics

Interlakes International School is a welcoming place where nearly 600 students come every day to learn, have fun, make friends, and grow both academically and socially.

We strive to create a safe and caring school environment where quality education comes first, children feel valued and supported, and teachers help each child reach their full potential. All main subjects are taught using the Cambridge Curriculum, and English is the language of instruction.

Below, you will find an overview of the structure of our school.

Kindergarten

We welcome children to our kindergarten from the age of 4. The kindergarten is divided into three levels: Nursery, Kindergarten 1, and Kindergarten 2. Our key values are to build a strong foundation, learning through play, and ensuring that children enjoy coming to school. We believe that young learners thrive best in a safe, caring environment where curiosity and confidence can grow.

From Nursery onwards, children receive lessons in English, Phonics, Mathematics, Science, Amharic, Music, and Sports. We also place strong emphasis on developing motor skills, including handwriting and creative activities such as arts and crafts. Starting in Kindergarten 2, we introduce the Cambridge Curriculum, gradually preparing them for Secondary School.

Lower Grades

Grades 1–4 are referred to as our Lower Grades. Each class is guided by a homeroom teacher who begins the day with the students, providing structure, continuity, and personal support. Throughout the day, lessons are delivered by  specialised subject teachers.

In addition to the main subjects—English, Mathematics, Science, and Amharic—students are also engaged in spelling, reading, computer science, art, and sports, supporting both academic development and creativity while promoting physical well-being.

Higher Grades

Our Higher Grades include Grades 5–8. As in the Lower Grades, each day begins with the homeroom teacher, who is also responsible for the overall well-being of the students.

In addition to the main subjects—English, Mathematics, Science, and Amharic, which are taught to all students—learners in the Higher Grades also receive instruction in Afaan Oromo, Moral Education (Grades 5–6), Citizenship (Grades 7–8), Social Studies, Computer Science, Art, and Sports.

Grade 8 is primarily focused on preparing for the Cambridge Checkpoint exams, which take place each year around April. These exams are marked by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and provide schools with an external, international benchmark for student performance.

High School

In 2024, we officially opened our High School. At present, we offer Grades 9 and 10, and we hope to expand in the coming years up to Grade 12.

Students in Grade 10 prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE exams, while those in Grade 12 will take AS & A-Level exams. The Cambridge subjects offered include English, Mathematics, Science (covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Computer Science, History, and Geography.

Across all our grades, students make full use of the facilities the school offers, such as a well-equipped science laboratory and a library, which is used for reading, studying, and accessing computers.
